Peter was the first rabbit I ever had. He was 9 years old when he passed away. Thankfully, Peter was very patient with me while I was still "ignorant" and learning about rabbits. For the first year I had him, he sat in a cage all day and only received occasional attention. I gave up trying to hold him because every time I opened his cage door, he ran to the back corner where I couldn't reach him so I just gave up!

A year later, I started reading rabbit books and became very enlightened and started feeling guilty about how I took care of this bunny during the first year. The first thing I did was move Peter's cage down to the floor so I could open the door and let him go in and out by himself. By this time, Peter had pretty much litter box trained himself and only sometimes left a bunny ball laying around while he had free time out of his cage. I then began to purchase Peter some toys and made sure that he had free time each day to run around and I would let him go in and out of his cage by himself.

Peter made it through my ignorance and became an absolutely wonderful bunny and was always very patient and tolerant with my kids. He was especially good with my son who is a special needs child and doesn't socialize well with people. Each time he sees Peter, his face would light up and he goes directly towards him.  I feel that Peter was so tolerant with us before we understood a lot about bunnies and he spent the rest of his life sharing that patience and tolerance with my son and other bunnies.  Peter lived with 5 other bunnies.  He has always accepted any new bunny I put with him and protects that new bunny from the others while they get to know each other.

Peter had been sick for several months, along with several of my other bunnies.  You can see their story here.  Peter had been on several different medicine and would go from getting better to getting worse.  He had an upper respiratory infect that just wouldn't go away.  On the morning of 2/20/03, we discovered that Peter had left us.  I was absolutely devastated.  My little old man, my first ever bunny, my bunny who taught me about rabbits and got me started in rescuing is gone.  He will never be replaced :(

Great Rabbit Resources worth checking out!
